UCM - Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine is located at Palmeiras - Beira, along the Indian Ocean.   The campus is about three blocks from the beach.   The Beira corridor is a major port of entry for oil and goods coming to neighboring Zimbabwe.

UCM - Medicine is a modern 7 year general-practice, rural medicine program.   A first class of 60 students began in August 2000.   English and Portuguese are the languages for instruction.   The academic program utilizes a student centered, Problem - Based Learning (PBL) approach, encouraging life-long learning skills necesary in this rapidly changing field.   The staff is international and well-qualified.  

Partnerships are being formed with European and American universities and foundations to help carry out a number of important projects on HIV / AIDS research, distance medical education, electronic medical library, and outreach to the community. Current projects involve Maastricht University, Austrian Development Cooperation, University of California - Los Angelos (UCLA), University of Pittsburgh, West Virginia University, US Agency for International Development (USAID), US Institutes of Health (NIH), Ipswitch, and a number of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) from Europe.
