Catholic University of Mozambique -
Master Plan, Medicine, and Information Technology

USGTC-UCM Project, November 12 - December 6, 2003.  Technical consultant Dave Walker completed a three week visit to the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) in Beira and Pemba.   During this visit he helped UCM update the university Master Plan, and also provided technology planning at the UCM Faculty of Medicine in Palmeiras-Beira and curriculum development at the UCM Faculty of Tourism Management and Information Technology at Pemba.   Internet connectivity at these two campuses continues to improve with help from USAID.   However, the eventual Internet solution - installation of a full-time 2-way satellite Internet system - remains in a planning stage.

Planning Interactive Distance Learning
for Catholic University of Mozambique

USGTC-UCM Project, February 22 - March 10, 2002.   Technical consultant Dave Walker completed a two week visit to the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM) in Beira, where they are in early stage of planning for Interactive Distance Education (IDL) for the central and northern region.  A critical first step is building Internet infrastructure capable of supporting IDL.  This will begin at the UCM Faculty of Agriculture in Cuamba, with installation of a full-time 2-way satellite Internet system, networking of their 20 existing PCs, and addition of a number of web cameras (estimated at USD $ 20,000 for the 1st year plus continuing Internet service fees of USD $ 500 per month).  UCM will also look for a second sponsor to place a similar system at the Faculty of Medicine in Beira.  IDL delivery will come much later, probably built around One Touch Knowledge System (www.OneTouch.com).  The overall effort will take several years.
